FAQ's

Why do we want a website?

A website is a handy reference tool that makes it easy for people to find class or club information such as officers, dues and how to pay them, and information on class/club events and how to attend.

Create interest in your class or club:

  • Reach alumni who don't receive or open mailings or subscribe to Cornell Alumni Magazine
  • Publicize upcoming events
  • Post late-breaking and up-to-the-minute announcements
  • Show your pride!

Build connections between members:

  • Share photos of reunions and events
  • Build a directory of classmates or club members
  • Find lost classmates
  • Post news, questions, greetings

Promote connections to Cornell:

  • Provide links to useful Cornell sites such as free e-mail forwarding, change of address, volunteer opportunities, admissions or alumni travel information, etc.

What does it cost?

Cornell University does not charge alumni groups for space on its server. Your organization may decide to invest in software or equipment for your webmaster. Remember that expenses incurred in the development of a website may be offset by savings in printing and postage, greater attendance at events, and increased dues paying.

Who is responsible for class and club webpages?

You!

Class and club webpages are built and maintained solely by volunteers. We do not dictate content or place restrictions on the disk space you can use. Volunteer webmasters are responsible for updating their own sites and providing their own content.

Exceptions: alumni.cornell webmasters may have to help you with interactive forms and content you need to post on the Secure Server (online dues forms, for instance).

Make sure material you post on your site does not violate copyrights.

What should we include on our site?

  • A main page identifying the organization and including links to the site's interior pages.
  • A "mailto:" link at the bottom of the main page with the e-mail address of the group's webmaster.
  • A list of class or club officers with e-mail addresses and/or phone numbers
  • Information about upcoming class or club events (keep it up to date!)

Optional content:

  • Photos from class events
  • Directory of class members' e-mail and web page addresses
  • List of lost classmates
  • Message from the class president and/or class webmaster
  • Link to Class News columns in Cornell Magazine
  • Class/club email list information
  • Class campaign/donor information
  • Links to Cornell websites
  • Class dues information and form
  • Cornell University news
  • Guest book for members to sign in and make comments
  • Regional event calendar link
