What is RSS?

RSS, short for Really Simple Syndication, is an easy way for websites to publish up to date content to a wide audience. Our RSS feeds always contain the latest news from the Cornell alumni community and events from the Alumni Events Calendar.

There are many ways to read an RSS feed. Websites such as Google and Yahoo! allow you to create a personalized home page and add you own RSS feeds. Modern web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 7.0, and Safari allow you to read RSS feeds through your bookmarks. Additionally, there are software packages such as NewsGator and Google Reader designed to read RSS feeds.

RSS feeds can also be used to generate dynamic web content. If you want your site to always contain up to date news without having to manually update it, RSS feeds are the answer!

Putting RSS on your website

We have created a Coldfusion function (the programming language installed on our server) which will allow you to easily display RSS feeds on your site. You can choose to display one of the news and event feeds listed below, or choose another RSS 2.0 feed. To get started, download the zip file below and follow the step by step instructions in the 'readme.txt' file.

This is what your users will see. You can customize the output to show any number of recent items, toggle the descriptions on and off, etc.
