Whether you are looking for an inclusive community of Cornellians, or a welcoming group of American expatriate compatriots, look no further than the newly forming Cornell Club of Luxembourg. The group is led by Lucien Clavier MS ’14, PhD ’16, a volunteer leader who knows the meaning of hospitality, and is heading up this great convocation. Lucien “aims to give alumni in Luxembourg, as well as their parents and friends, a way to expand their knowledge and connection to Cornell, grow friendship with other Cornellians, continue the process of life-long learning, and serve the university, alumni, students, and the overall community.” Lucien even details why you should join this and other alumni clubs in his LinkedIn article. The Luxembourg team is helping to energize and connect not only Cornellians in the region, but the whole expat community through shared cultural and educational experience. We look forward to hearing more best practices from Luxembourg in the years to come.

The Cornell Club of London's Thanksgiving Dinner
London | November 26, 2016

Picture 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

About 75 people - students, alumni and guests - gathered at the East India Club in central London for the 32nd Annual Cornell Club of London Family Thanksgiving Dinner. We had alumni from the class of 1952 and prospective alumni from the class of 2018. The tradition began when Cornell first initiated its Cornell Abroad program in the UK and has continued ever since. The event is held on the Saturday following the actual Thanksgiving date as Thanksgiving and the following day are regular work or study days and are not really "recognized" in the UK (though Black Friday sales have somehow crossed the pond). But this gives the students an opportunity to come to London from their various UK universities for the weekend; there were several students from Scotland this year. The meal is always the traditional one (with vegetarian options if requested) and we sit at tables by candlelight. It is also an opportunity for the students to tell the alumni about their life in the UK - and often about differences they find between UK and US universities - and vice versa. And, of course, a highlight of the event is singing the Alma Mater - a thread across the different ages.-Natalie Teich, CCL President

The Cornell Club of Switzerland's 30th Anniversary & AGM Thanksgiving
Geneva | November 26, 2016

Picture 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8

Getting younger at the Cornell Club of Switzerland!

We were wondering whether the annual Thanksgiving dinner is a good indicator of the demographic profile of the Cornell Club of Switzerland! But more on that later…

This year’s celebrations started with a guided tour of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva. While we all know it as an iconic Swiss institution, it was mind blowing to see the efforts put in by the Swiss to accept and document refugees during the World Wars, in a precise and orderly Swiss style. All by volunteers. Hand written index cards, catalogued so that families and relatives could be located and unified. The mostly European effort at that time has now expanded globally with the International Committee of the Red Cross present in almost all countries of the world, reaching out in emergencies and keeping up the work of helping family members find each other, together with national partners. The old, as well as updated, systems of record keeping and photographs are vividly exhibited at the museum.

After this moving visit, we wandered down towards the lake of Geneva, some stopping off at the peaceful Ariana glass museum just across the street, others strolling through the welcoming botanical gardens to finally reach the lake, admiring its “jet d’eau”, evading joggers and bikers, to arrive at the Hotel President Wilson, grandly standing on the lake with views over the peaks of the Mont-Blanc, now pale pink in the setting winter sun.

Thanksgiving dinners seldom take place in Geneva, since some consider it too far from the central hubs of Basel or Zurich (all of three hours!). Nevertheless, about 45 persons make it each year and we are amazed how the Swiss lay out impressive and true to American tradition, Thanksgiving dinners.

But before we get to that - the annual meeting. Impeccably prepared and smoothly run by our President, Dr. Christophe Zimmerli, with financials tirelessly prepared by Bernie McCabe, a former President, informing us of the club’s healthy bank balance and the importance of keeping it so by not overspending. Solid Swiss advice! We were not sure whether the champagne glasses we saw just before entering the meeting room contributed to the speedy conclusion of the meeting.

This was a first. Certainly due to the generosity of Pablo Pizarro, a former Cornellian, General Manager of the President Wilson. But yes, champagne was flowing at the aperitif, together with bites that only the President Wilson Hotel could produce. Some of us tottered and others walked gracefully into the dining room to be served a seasonal pumpkin soup as starters. Then, four well browned turkeys were displayed, accompanied by an over the top array of delicious veggies, well beyond a typical Thanksgiving, concluded with a dessert and “mignardises”.

But the cherry on the cake was during introductions around the room to find that young Nicolas de Raemy is a 2016 graduate, others graduating in the last decade - and yet others in the last century! A marvelous spread of age groups, vivacity, stamina and conversations. So congratulations to Christophe, Club President, and the real mover and shaker behind him, his wife Maria. They have made an extraordinary effort to draw in new and younger members, enabled by a sliding membership fee and great networking opportunities. We were ready to vote in Christophe as President for always - as long as the free champagne kept flowing!

In Saigon, we started the night by going to a cosy dinner at Bui Quan to enjoy delicious traditional Vietnamese food which the coming students will dearly miss. We then proceeded to Xu Lounge, for casual convorsation, where we were joined by more alums and friends. Overall, I think we had a great night that connected students, alums, and friends together to build and foster a Cornell community that has a strong association with Vietnam. As people continue to move, work, travel, study and live all over the world, the Cornell and Vietnam ties remain important for future connections and endeavors as we share the same roots and interests, which will serve as a base for the future Cornell club of Vietnam. Germany's Cornell Weekend 2015

The Cornell Club of Germany's Cornell Weekend 2015
Leipzig | June 5, 2015

Picture 1 | 2

30+ Cornellians in Germany (and Austria) came together in Leipzig, Germany, for the Cornell Club of Germany's 24th (consecutive!) Annual Cornell Weekend, June 5-7. The program started with a Welcome Dinner at the Auerbach's Keller, an establishment dating to at least the first half of the 15th century. If it sounds familiar, you must have come across Goethe’s Faust at some point ... A local journalist’s presentation titled 1,000 years of Leipzig history in 100 minutes made dinner on Friday both educational and entertaining.

Saturday began with the Annual General Meeting during which time regional chapters reported on their activities this past year. Members of the club also celebrated Klaus Conrad’s (MS ’60) long time service on the club board, and voted in Deloyce Conrad ’59 and Volkmar Hellmich (MBA ’99) as the new VP and Treasurer of the club. A guided tour of city center, a boat ride on the Markkleeberg Lake, and an organ concert at the St. Nicholas Church were among highlights of the day. Dinner on Saturday featured Hans-Gunter Thonemann’s (MS '81) on the topic of Particle Physics at Cornell - A Journey through time from Ithaca via Las Alamos, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to Geneva, Higgs, and Heidelberg, Tubingen, and back ... " Animated Q&A went past mid-night with a few Cornell friends continuing on the intriguing subject at the hotel lounge till around 2:00 a.m.

Hongnan MA, Director of International Alumni Relations shared the latest from the hill and the status of Cornell’s global alumni engagement and advancement endeavors at the Big Red Brunch on Sunday, which marked the closure of this intellectually enriching weekend filled with warm touches of friendship, laughter, and Big Red pride, thanks to the thoughtful planning by the club president Wolfgang Fritzemeyer (LLM ’84), the club board, and CHS friends. Geneva | May 2, 2015

Picture 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

The spring rain did not deter the enthusiasm of the crowd waiting to enter the United Nations in Geneva on 2 May 2015, for the Charter Day Celebration. We comprised not only Cornellians, but also members of the Oxford and Cambridge Club, with whom we have a reciprocal relationship. Our young and dynamic guide, a student of International Relations at the nearby Geneva Institute of Graduate Studies, was not only well informed, but passionate about the principles and functions of the United Nations. If the UN did not exist, there would be a need to recreate such a world body, where every nation state has a voice and a vote. The best and only negotiating ground for the multiplicity of political, humanitarian and human rights issues, which are the focus of the UN at its Geneva Headquarters.
Our tour through the immense Art Deco building was impressive and enthralling, visualising the many debates - from international politics to peace-building and human rights - that take place in these chambers and which we see only on television or read about in the media. An array of breathtaking gifts donated by Member States line the halls, floors and even ceilings of the UN premises. As we ventured out of the building, hearing the calls of the peacocks after the rain, some managed to sight one gloriously floating through the grounds, its tail outstretched, looking for an afternoon snack. For more on the UN in Geneva check out: www.unog.ch.
And then, leaving a global world, we entered into the reality of Geneva, still grey and overcast, but oh so organised with its dependable public transport which whisked us away to the old town, across the Mont Blanc bridge, crossing the river Arve on the right and the lake of Geneva on the left. A short - and steep - walk uphill in the old town got us to the Café Papon, wisely selected by Christophe Zimmerli, our erudite President of the Cornell Club in Geneva. Ensconced on a hill overlooking the Parc des Bastions with its historic facade, the restaurant was a perfect choice, not only in the history reflected in its age old stone walls, but the warm ambiance, excellent service and superb menu. One could go into great detail and ecstasies over the Swiss wine list and the French specialities, but I leave that to you to salivate on at www.cafe-papon.com.
The animated conversations, laughter, the mixing of generations, from a 14 year-old son of a Cornelian, to a sixty or seventy-something, testified to a very successful celebration of Cornell’s Sesquicentennial, in the far flung outpost of Geneva…

"The exhibition of 67 paintings of American landscape, together with the launch of the book called 'Painting Diary 2014' (in Vietnamese name as 'Đi Vẽ-Nhật Ký Hội Hoạ 2014) by Trinh Lu was an occasion for art lovers in Hanoi to admire the beautiful nature of America in both visual and text materials. Almost 22 years ago, as among the first few Vietnamese intellects enrolled in the graduate program of Cornell University in New York, Trinh Lu had left great impressions with his on-campus exhibition of fantastic artworks. Generations of Vietnamese students at Cornell University while striking hard for academic excellency have also participated in diversed activities and thus generate engagement at the grassroots level with the States.

A mini reunion took place at the exhibition, in the form of a roundabout, with his fellow Vietnamese and American Cornellians who are now working in Vietnam. They discussed the on-going collaborative efforts with the States of each Cornell alumnus through his/her projects, the interpersonal ties formed by educational exchanges, the understanding spawned by cultural familiarity, and the power of art as a universal language to transcend boundaries among peoples that create the foundation for a resilient long-term partnership. Most of the focus on U.S.-Vietnam relations is understandably on political, security, and economic relations, but the whole story of the ties between the two nations requires an examination of the broad category of people-to-people relations, which incorporates all those aspects of diplomacy and engagement focused on building mutual understanding..." -Son Dang MAR '10

Zurich | February 19, 2015

Picture 1 | 2 | 3

On 19 February, 3 Cornellians and 6 NYU alumni attended an exciting guided tour ‘Behind the Scenes at HB Zurich’ to which we had been spontaneously invited by NYU.CH, the organization of NYU alumni in Switzerland. Did you know that Zurich’s main station (Hauptbahnhof) is home to around 135 shops and is used by approximately 412,000 passengers a day? We learnt a lot more and discovered many unknown corners of Switzerland's biggest train station such as a hidden unused 'reserve' highway, tons of technical equipment four floors underground or the first class SBB lounge. We even got to walk on the roof of the station, giving us spectacular views of Zurich by night. After the tour, we went for drinks, tapas and more at TIME. Many thanks to NYU.CH, and in particular to Johanna Herbst, for organising and inviting Cornell Club of Switzerland members to this event. - Thomas Schoeber

Picture 1 | 2 | 3

On 26 January, 9 Cornellians located in and around Basel got together for an evening of wonderful Italian wine tasting in Muttenz. Senore A. Balzano, the owner of Via Vitis Weinhandlung GmbH, greeted us with an apero including Prosecco. Sr. Balzano began the wine tasting with a brief introduction on how to properly taste wine. The key messages: try again and again and again! And if you like it, it is good; what someone else likes, may not necessarily be to your taste. It is important to use all your senses: nose, eyes, taste buds and the overall impression. After the intensive introduction to wine tasting, we were able to enjoy the wines with some homemade antipasti, meatballs to vegetables soaked in olive oil, octopus salad to classic Italian coldcuts, just to mention a few of the scrumptious platters, all were accompanied with the wines to which we had just been introduced. Here is to the next glass of wine!

Incoming freshmen, transfer & graduate students, current students, alumni, and parents enjoyed an afternoon tea at the historical Helena May, a unique heritage building in the heart of Hong Kong, and discussed many topics from transportation to cell phone carriers and haircut options.  Loaded with all the tips and advises, we wish them the best of luck! - Michelle So '99

Munich | July 24, 2014

Picture 1

A dozen Cornellians (families included) recently joined in for the annual beer garden get-together on a warm summer evening in Munich, Germany. The "attendance span" of Cornellians ranged from the class of '59 to the class of '15, including both new- and "old-"comers, with a wide range of colleges and schools being represented. Except for the two retirees, all came after work, but without exception, all joined in the lively conversation which included not only reminiscing about days on the Hill, but topics such as current German-American affairs -- not altogether different from bygone campus days! - Deloyce Conrad '59

Through this event, incoming freshmen are given the opportunity to ask questions and get to know their fellow classmates before going to Cornell. This year, we even had a brief presentation giving new students information and tips on fall enrollment. It was a great night for both freshmen and returning students to get to know each other and have a fun time.

HK Martin Tang

Cornell and China: Past, Present and Future
Hong Kong | June 20, 2014

Picture 1 | 2

This event must be one of our most memorable and meaningful in Hong Kong.
Vivian Lau kicked off with a rousing introduction, Martin took us on a sweeping time travel, taking us back to more than a hundred years to discuss the few prominent Chinese graduates and wrapped up with where Cornell is heading in China with the Johnson-Tsinghua MBA and planned Shanghai consulate. In between, Kathleen Ting recited a poem composed by Hu Shih, one of the most prominent figures in Chinese history to attend Cornell. It's a beautiful poem and worth sharing with you:

Do you still remember Ithaca, above Lake Cayuga,
Between hill and hill so many waterfalls of wondrous beauty?
And beyond, the far distant single thread of shining lake,
Fall colors on cascading waters, West Hill sunsets? There is no equal
Remember the sound of running stream coming close up to your pillow
Night after night, like a rainstorm beating an Autumn forest?
That is our unforgettable “second home”
Today it is all with me again
The friendships of departed days, the landscapes of our old wanderings--
Half in the poems by you and me; half in the comings and goings of dreams

-------------(Poem by Hu Shih)

Here are two pictures of the event. The waving one is where we tried to make a "video hello" with smartphone for Cornell hotelies at Okinawa over the weekend for their annual Asia regional conference.
