Summer School Scholarship 2007

The Cornell Club of London, comprising alumni of Cornell University residing in the U.K., is planning to award one scholarship to enable a U.K. undergraduate student to attend the six week 2007 summer session at Cornell University.

These notes, which accompany the application form, provide background information about Cornell University and the scholarship. Details about the application procedure and timetable are also included.

Cornell University, one of the United States' prestigious "Ivy League" universities, occupies a 745 acre campus overlooking Ithaca in upstate New York. There are regular plane (flight time less than one hour) and bus connections between Ithaca and New York city. The university has a student body of around 18,000 undergraduates and postgraduates and 1600 faculty members. With sixteen libraries, extensive laboratory and computing facilities, sports fields, a performing arts center and an art museum on campus, Cornell is an ideal place to sample the best of the U.S. academic system. Its location, bordered by woodlands, gorges and waterfalls and nestled above Cayuga Lake, is particularly attractive during the summer.

Cornell's summer session attracts students of all ages and from all over the U.S. - and further afield. Cornell-registered students choose summer school to make up extra courses; high school and adult students come for the special programmes arranged for them. And international students - of whom the Cornell Club of London Scholarship holder will be one - choose Cornell to gain some understanding of the U.S. university system, joining in the regular courses offered for credit to U.S. students.

The six week summer session runs from 25 June to 5 August 2007, including an exam period at the end of the session. The Scholarship winner will be invited to choose two courses (up to nine credits) from any discipline, except special programmes and physical education courses; the latter may be taken on a noncredit basis and paid for by the Scholarship winner. The Summer Session catalogue will be issued in early March, and advice will be available to assist the Scholarship winner to select appropriate courses and process the summer school application.

The winner of the Cornell Club of London Scholarship will be expected to complete all class assignments and sit examinations at the end of the courses as prescribed by Cornell University. A written report of approximately 1,000 words should be submitted to the Club's Scholarship Committee within two months of returning to the U.K. and the winner should be willing to assist with the future publicity or fundraising activities associated with the Scholarship Fund, involving a very minimal time commitment.

The Scholarship will cover

tuition costs for two courses (up to nine credits)

                 housing costs for six weeks

meal costs up to $15.00 a day

                 visa application cost

The Scholarship winner should have resources to pay for the transatlantic and local travel, books and stationery, insurance, extra meal or entertainment costs, and any additional courses selected.

A list of courses offered during the 2007 Summer Session may be found at www.summer.cornell.edu; the complete catalogue will be available in March.

To be eligible for the Scholarship, students should be

U.K. nationals, resident in the U.K.

registered in a full undergraduate degree course of a U.K. university (any subject, providing at least one year of the course will have been completed satisfactorily by summer 2007).

willing and able to contribute to the Club's scholarship promotion activities upon return.

The application details and timetable are as follows:

the Summer Session 2007 catalogue will be available in March 2007, when the Scholarship winner may make a choice of courses.
