The Cornell Club of Hawaii uses an E-mail listserv in order to
notify members of upcoming events and to disseminate other information.
This self-managing system allows members to easily subscribe or
unsubscribe themselves from the e-mail list.
Subscribing
Send an e-mail to listproc@cornell.edu that will command
the computer (not a human being) to add, update or remove your name
from the “cchi-L” mailing list. To add your name to the list, type
“subscribe cchi-L” followed by your name and class
number in the body of the message (see example below).

That's it! A more detailed explanation on how to use the mailing
list can also be found at http://www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/email/using-lists/index.html.
There, you can learn how to manage when and how you receive e-mail
notices from the Cornell Club. For example, you could turn off the
messages while you're away on a trip or update your e-mail address
to reflect a new service provider. By sending simple messages to
the "list-serv" computer, these changes can be made automatically.
Welcome
Message
When you subscribe, you'll automatically get a welcome e-mail with
all the information to get you started. Here are a few things to
note:
- The welcome message will contain your subscription address.
You'll have to be sure that whenever you send messages to the
list-serv computer, that the "From" field in your e-mail uses
this address (this mainly affects people with e-mail forwarding
services like CU-CONNECT, but we can explain it further if you
need more help).
- That message will also contain your password. Save this password,
as you'll need to use it any time you make changes to your record.
- It also contains a few pointers on how to use the list, as
well as where to go for more information (http://www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/email/using-lists/).
- Currently, the list is set up so that replies to any messages
sent out through the list will go back to the sender and not the
entire list. This should prevent it from becoming a bulletin board
which will clog all of our e-mail accounts.
Need
more help?
Of course, if you lose your password or have any other problems,
Ryan Tam is able to make changes
to your record. Just let him know what you need, and he'll take
care of it.
