Cornell Basketball, January 2002

On a very snowy Wednesday January 2, the Cornell basketball team visited Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta for a game against Georgia Tech. Despite five inches of snow, a hardy group of 80 alumni showed up to cheer the Big Red. For many, it brought back fond memories of walking to Barton or Newman Halls on snowy nights for games on campus. Despite the apparent meteorological advantage, Cornell did lose to the Yellow Jackets by a score of 86 to 68. However, the team did mount several runs and had the opportunity to cut the deficit to single digits within the final few minutes. Before the game, Alan LeBlanc '84 hosted a reception at Max Lager's American Grill and Brewery. Forty alumni showed up to consume hors d'oeuvres and cocktails and meet Big Red Basketball coach Steve Donahue. Joining the coach was Guard A.J. Castro, Hotel '05. Special thanks to the Cornell Hotel Society and organizer Robert Mandelbaum '81 for putting together a great evening!

Cornell University Glee Club, January 2002

On Jan. 9th, the Cornell University Glee Club visited the Atlanta on their annual tour. This year's tour took the Glee Club to Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando, Atlanta, Memphis, and Washington during Cornell's winter break. The concert here was hosted by the Embry Hills United Methodist Church in Chamblee. The hall was a simple but intimate setting for the choir. The concert began with several sacred pieces, including the breath-taking O Magnum Mysterium by Morten Lauridsen. The program continued with pieces from Eastern Europe, featuring a Georgian wedding song, Shen Khar Venakhi, and the spirited EJ Dziny Dziny Dom. The first half concluded with several spirituals, one of which was arranged by director Professor Scott Tucker. The second half began with a few drinking songs. The Hangovers did a set of three contemporary pieces. At this time, the Glee Club invited alumni to sing a few Cornell fight songs. The Glee Club also invited the Morehouse Glee Club to sing the spiritual "Got a Mind to do Right." The concert ended with Cornell's Evening Song and Alma Mater. Many thanks to the dozens of people who hosted Glee Clubbers and coordinator John Riley '00.
