Cornell University 1952 Class Council Meeting Minutes
January 20, 2007
The meeting was called to order by Jan Hofmann McCulloch, co-President with Tom Foulkes. Those present included Tom Foulkes, Joy Rees Hoffman, Bob Chabon, Jean Brown Craig, Judy Calhoun Schurman, Gordon Williams, Trudy Serby Gildea, Jack Carpenter, Terry Warren, and Dot Crozier Warren.
The first report was given on the fund-raising efforts of our class by Brenda Teeter, Reunion Campaign officer and Rebecca Vallely, Associate Director of Gift Planning. They reported that our class has the highest number of Cayuga Society members (com-posed of those remembering Cornell in their will). Fund-raising Chairs of our class for our 55th Reunion, Don Follett and Carol Winter Mund, have already contacted class members concerning various forms of gift-giving.
Copies of the Minutes of the 2006 meeting were distributed by Trudy Gildea, Class Secretary, examined and discussed, with Terry Warren moving approval, seconded by Judy Schurman. The motion passed.
Vice-President Gordon Williams gave a comprehensive report on the activities of the Affinity Committee, whose purpose is to promote a strong class identity by maintaining relationships within the class. To help make personal contact with so many classmates, one or more persons in each of the 100 or so groups have been recruited to make con-tact with their group to promote Reunion attendance. Judy Calhoun Schurman and Tom Martin have agreed to serve on the Affinity Committee and have proven to be “hardworking, effective and helpful” according to Gordon. They have set a goal of mak-ing contact with at least 50% of our class (out of about 1200 living members). These contacts will be completed by the end of February and will precede the mailing of the reunion registration material in March. Gordon emphasized that experience has shown how personal encouragement from a friend can make a difference in the reunion atten-dance decision.
Treasurer Jack Carpenter gave his Treasurer’s Report with a written statement of cash receipts and disbursements for the year ending June 30, 2006. The balance as of December 31, 2006, was $43,574, showing an $8,055 excess of receipts over dis-bursements. It was moved by Terry Warren and seconded by Gordon Williams to ac-cept the Treasurer’s report. Motion carried. There was a discussion of the method of approving the bills charged to our class. It was suggested that Jack check with Carol Fenton in the Cornell office regarding the treasurer’s verification of these charges, es-pecially if over a certain amount.
Jan Hofmann McCulloch gave the report for Joan Boffa Gaul, our Class Correspondent, who has been faithfully executing her job in spite of some health problems. She has done an excellent job of reporting class news and keeping in contact with the Web Mas-ters Paul and Polly Prine Herman.
Tom Foulkes, reporting for the Webmasters, commended their dynamic, up-to-date information, and said that they will soon be posting Reunion information on the Web Site at <http://classof52.alumni.cornell.edu.>
The Membership report, given by Jan, showed that it was difficult to locate the miss-ing classmates, despite efforts to track down the bad addresses. It was recommended that this effort be abandoned, due to the many years elapsing between graduation and the present time.
Reunion Chairs Joy Rees Hoffman and Bob Chabon gave a detailed report on Reun-ion plans and activities. Their considerable efforts included arranging for dormitory space, entertainment, transportation, panel discussions, greeters to welcome people, decorations, food, wine, location of activities, dovetailing our activities with other events on campus, food service, and much more! Some of the highlights of their plans include:
The general theme of our weekend -- James Bond 007 – will be celebrated Sat-urday night with appropriate music, costumes, and food.
For early arrivals there will be a cruise Thursday afternoon on Cayuga Lake with wine and music, and including narration by a person familiar with the geology and de-velopment along the lake. This event will be limited to 32 people.
Friday noon luncheon will be in Duffield Hall (on the Engineering campus) with entertainment by the Cayuga Waiters of the ‘50s, followed by a panel discussion from 1:15 – 2:45 in Kennedy Hall (on the Ag campus). Professors Joel Silbey and Ted Lowi will tackle the subject of “What kind of a President are we going to elect in 2008?”
Friday evening there will be a reception at Sapsucker Woods, followed by dinner at the Country Club of Ithaca. A Saturday afternoon interaction from 2:30 – 4:00 with the alumni class of 2002 will include sharing memories of the two classes, separated by 50 years. We will discuss events that occurred while we were undergraduates, compar-ing and contrasting what campus life was like for the men, the women, dorm life, the rules, classes, the pranks and major events that occurred on campus during our respec-tive times at Cornell.
Saturday night is James Bond 007 Night! Cornell Caterers will handle most of the food service, with the Country Club of Ithaca serving the Friday night dinner and the Farewell Brunch on Sunday. All dining will be inside to avoid any weather problems.
The publication of a new class directory was offered to Pat Stitt Truell. Terry War-ren moved to have her proceed with this job, seconded by Tom Foulkes, who empha-sized that it should be completed well before reunion so people could easily get in touch. Motion carried. (The directory was subsequently canceled due to lack of lead time).
The 2007 selection for the Cornell Freshman Book Project is “The Pick-Up” by Nad-ine Gordinier, the story of a bi-racial relationship. Our class did not participate for the last year, and there was a general consensus that there would not be enough interest to continue. This year’s book, “The Great Gatsby”, was discussed at the CACO meeting on Friday afternoon and was well attended.
Tom announced that Jane Kiely Davis, our nominating chairman, should be con-tacted if anyone wants to nominate a classmate for a class office.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,,
Trudy Gildea, Class Secretary
