Cornell University 1952 Class Council Meeting Minutes
February 18, 2006
The meeting of the Class of '52 was called to order at 2:45 PM by Co-President Jan McCulloch. Present were: Tom Foulkes, Catherine Hegeman, Dori Warren, Terry Warren, Judy Schurman, Gordon Williams, Joy Hoffman, Joan Gaul, Trudy Gildea, and Jan McCulloch.
Brenda Teeter and Joheson Ivers, both of the Cornell Fund, visited the meeting to report on "class giving", which remains strong. Our class has the largest number of members of the Cayuga Society (100 members). Don Follett and Carol Mund, our classmate fund raisers, will be with us next year at our class meeting as we head into our 55th reunion.
The minutes of last year's meeting were read. Terry Warren moved to accept the minutes. Gordon William's seconded the motion. The motion passed.
Gordon Williams gave an update on the regional affinity group programs. Jean Lewis, Rochester, NY, George Roslund, San Francisco, CA, and Joy Hoffman, Elmira, NY, agreed to have an activity. This could help promote reunion.
The new president of the University will continue working on the ideas presented in President Lehman's "Call to Engagement".
Jack Carpenter's treasurer's report was distributed and explained by Tom Foulkes. He noted that the class treasury is in good shape, standing at $32, 067 on June 30, 2005-the end of our fiscal year. On Dec. 31, 2005 the balance was $43,482-but the Cornell Magazine charge had not been entered for the current year. The report was accepted.
Joan Gaul reported on her activities as class correspondent. The number of words allocated to a class column is in proportion to the number of subscriptions paid. She has to edit the news to get the information in the alloted space. We need more subscriptions-and therefore more dues paying members.
Tom Foulkes reported on the website for Paul and Polly Herman:
1) What would people like to see on the web page?
2) There is a need for more pictures; they should be changed more often.
3) Paul and Polly will include the "bad addresses", hoping to get some response.
4) There will be links to the 55th reunion.
5) There will be a memory page. Who would you like to see the most? My most memorable moments at Cornell. This web page will be a great tie-in to our 55th reunion.
6) Should our deceased members be on the web page, and what should be the title? Opinion was that this should be a cumulative list, and that it should be called "Classmates we miss".
It was reported by Jan that there will be a "tip" page included on copies of the "Alumni News" to people who have taken the news in the past year, but have not renewed. Joy Hoffman mentioned offering automatic payment on credit cards; this is already an option.
Joy reported on planning for the 55th reunion. Her co-chair Robert Chabon was not present. Plans so far include:
1) Thursday of reunion there will be a boat trip on Cayuga Lake, with a commentary by one of the employees on the geology of the region.
2) Joy and Bob are considering ideas for a unique reunion theme.
3) There was a discussion of the class logo--whether to alter it for the reunion. Bob and Joy will perhaps work on a minor alteration.
4) Do we want to include a class magnet mentioning the date of the reunion?
5) Joy will also investigate the buttons for the reunion, perhaps with a picture from the yearbook on the buttons. Will Cornell allow this? Susan Doney, our Alumni Affairs staff person sat in on part of the meeting and gave some information on the University's policy on the above subject.
A letter will be sent to Jean Craig, thanking her for arranging our wonderful Friday night dinner with the class of 1951. The secretary will also write a thank-you letter to Paul Blanchard for arranging the Fall Get-Together at homecoming.
Book Project-$1900 was spent on the book project for the past year-the book and postage. The feedback on Things Fall Apart, last years book, indicated only a few comments on the web page. Terry Warren suggested that we pass for the current year. The consensus was to let a year go by before deciding whether to take part in ordering the next book in 2007.
A.D. White House- In 1987 our class took on the project of renovating the solarium at the A. D. White house and funding an interior garden. A permanent plaque was placed on the wall indicating that the renovation and garden were provided by the Cornell Class of '52. The garden was to be maintained with orchids-however, the orchids have proven to be a difficult choice. Plantations, the caretaker, now wants to be relieved of the responsibility and hand it over to the A. D. White house. $25,000 was the original fund raising goal and $15,000 was actually raised and spent. Terry Warren offered that the class had legally discharged its obligation. Involving "Master Gardeners" in the future was suggested. It was agreed for the class to give up to $1000 from the class treasury to the A.D. White house as startup funds for a new garden in the solarium. Terry Warren made the motion, seconded by Joan Gaul, to let Tom Foulkes and Jan McCulloch resolve this issue. Passed.
Bad Addresses-Jan McCulloch reported on the project of trying to find lost classmates. A committee of seven have offered to search (as well as Polly and Paul Herman's efforts on the web).
The disposition of the class treasury at the end of the class life is a long range issue which must ultimately be decided by the class. Two ideas were put forward as possible destinations for any remaining class treasury balance: the existing Class of '52 scholarship, or ongoing maintenance of the garden in the A. D. White house solarium.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 PM.
Respectfully Submitted by Jan McCulloch from Trudy Gildea's notes.
