Class of 1952 Five Year Meeting Report-June 8th, 2007.
The following is a copy of the report given by the outgoing class co-presidents
at the June 8, 2007 Class Reunion Meeting.
I’m Jan Hoffman McCullough, and I’m Tom Foulkes--we’re the current Co-Presidents of the Class of ‘’52. We’d like to welcome you to the “Once Every Five Years” General Class Meeting...but this year is special...IT’S JAMES BOND 007 TIME!
We’ve got a lot of information-and promise to take not more than 30 minutes-only kidding-about 10 minutes should do it-then we have some very special entertainment for you.
(Tom Foulkes) I’m going to cover some of the highlights of the past 5 years, and
(Jan Hofmann McCulloch) I’m going to recognize our present class officers and introduce you to your new class officers for the next five years.
(Tom Foulkes) Some of the highlights of our term:
-we met with the Executive Committee of the Class Officers each year in January or February...we held a pay-as-you-go dinner on the previous evening in conjunction with the class of ‘53-many area class members also joined us.
-our Treasurer Jack Carpenter kept our feet to the fire and we have tried to handle your funds responsibly. Our class account balance as of April 30, 2007 was $28, 700.
-Gordon Williams, Vice-President, has handled several special projects...most recently a large effort to encourage classmates to return for reunion.
-our class endowed scholarship fund has prospered and allowed one or two undergraduates to have scholarship assistance each year.
-we have hosted a class cocktail party and dinner at Homecoming every Fall...it was most recently hosted by Paul Blanchard and held in conjunction with other classes of the early 50’s.
-we made a one-time additional gift to the Solarium of the A.D. White House for updating their
plant collection. You may recall at our 35th reunion, Rik Clark led an effort to renovate that space...there is a handsome plaque on the wall commemorating our class gift.
-for two years we sent all classmates who were either dues paying members or who had made a gift to Cornell in the previous year a copy of the required freshman reading book...we received some positive comments and some adverse ones. In recent years we decided to announce the title of the book and let each classmate pursue it at their own discretion.
-we have continued to achieve high records for dues paying members-in the current year, 474 of you have paid dues to the class. Most of you receive the Cornell Alumni Magazine and this money is also very helpful in starting reunion activities every five years.
Paul and Polly Herman have been our website commanders and have brought that effort to a whole new level of excellence. One item that they initiated is a memoriam section which lists all classmates who are no longer with us. It is the only such list that is available.
-Joan Boffa Gaul has done yeoman’s service as the class correspondent and has initiates the “memories” collection of thoughts that is shown on our class web site. Check this out if you haven’t already done so.
-our reunion co-chairs Joy Rees Hoffman and Bob Chabon and their committee have done an outstanding job preparing for this 007 reunion...your class has achieved:
* 500 donors (new record for 55th reunion)
- 80 Tower Club members (new record for 55th reunion)
- 109 Cayuga Society members (all time class record high for the University)
- 48% participation rate in giving
- $4,611,000 total gifts to Cornell from the class
Now I’d like to turn it over to Jan who will handle the “personality”” part of the program.
(Jan Hofmann McCullough) It is an honor for me to recognize your classmates who have helped us with the class business for the past five years. We have a special gift for each of them. Would each of the following join us at the podium:
-Gordon Williams--Vice President
-Trudy Serby Gildea--Secretary
-Jack Carpenter--Treasurer
-Joan Boffa Gaul--Class Correspondent
-Bob Chabo--Reunion Co-Chair
-Joy Rees Hoffman--Reunion Co-Chair
-Don Follett--Fund Raising Co-Chair
-Carol Winter Mund--Fund Raising Co-Chair
-Paul and Polly Prine Herman--Co-Webmasters
-Carl Gortzig--Historian
-Jane Kiely Davis--Nominating Chair
I’d like to ask all class members to give a big round of applause to our class officers for their efforts.
And now I’d like to ask Jane Kiely Davis to announce the new class officers for the next five year term:
-Joy Rees Hoffman--Co-President
-Paul Blanchard--Co-President
-Judy Calhoun Schurman--Vice-President
-Jan Hofman McCullough--Secretary
-Jack Carpenter--Treasurer
-Joan Boffa Gaul--Class Correspondent
-Terry and Dori Warren--Reunion Co-Chairs
-Jean Thompson Cooper--Fund Raising Co-Chair
-Al Rose--Fund Raising Co-Chair
-Rich Davis--Webmaster*
I’d like to ask all of you to stand. Let’s give them a hand. Thank you.
(*ed. note: Subsequently, Polly and Paul Herman replaced Rich Davis as Webmasters for the next term-see main page.)
Now, we need to vote on the new slate of officers:
--all in favor say: “aye”......(unanimous)
--all against say: “nay”......(none)
--the “ayes” have it.
Congratulations to out new Class Officers--we know you will do a good job.
Is there any new business that requires attention at this time.....(no response).
Lastly, Tom Foulkes and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to lead the Class of 1952 for the past 5 years. It has been a privilege and a pleasure.
I declare the class meeting adjourned.
