Cornell University was a choice location for many silent movies produced in Ithaca, where the diverse landscape provided a dramatic natural setting for silent movies filled with romance, exploits, and peril. Cornell students served both as extras and production assistants to the early movie producers. In 1914 Theodore Wharton established a movie studio and production company, Wharton Inc., on the southern shores of Cayuga Lake in Renwick Park, now called Stewart Park. The Wharton Inc. studio was a thriving complex of movie sets and production facilities where hundreds of silent serial episodes and feature movies were produced within a six-year period. Join the Ithaca Motion Picture Project and see movie clips, accompanied by live music, filmed 100 years ago around Ithaca, including many on Cornell’s campus. Could that be your grandfather next to silent movie star Virginia Lee on Campus Road?
