Foundation Relations and the Cornell Community

Benefits: What Can Foundation Relations Do For You?
Our goal is to make the grant-getting process easier and more accessible to meet your program and project goals.

For everyone on campus we can:

  • Give you the guidance and tools to become your own expert in approaches to private foundations.

  • Assist you in determining if your program is suitable for foundation funding.

  • Where appropriate, offer workshops in foundation processes, prospect research and/or proposal writing.

  • Keep you informed when private funding opportunities arise in your field.

  • Guide you to the most current electronic resources for information about specific foundations. Start here.

  • Let you know when existing Cornell contacts can make a difference for your approach.

  • Save you the embarrassment of conflicting approaches.

  • Provide telephone or e-mail consultation.

  • Review and comment on your draft proposals to foundations for program or project assistance. (Academic research needs are also often handled by the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).)

  • Facilitate the submission of a proposal, including required supporting documents and, where appropriate, arrange for cover letters from institutional representatives.

  • Post-grant assistance includes institutional acknowledgement (thank you letters), tracking information about your award, and providing reminders when reports are due.

For those projects that have been designated by the president, the provost or a dean as an institutional priority, Foundation Relations can also:

  • Work closely with you to develop your project from idea to fundable program.

  • Conduct prospect research to target specific foundations for your project.

  • Travel with you to meet with potential funders.

  • Provide briefings and travel arrangements for visits to or from foundation representatives.

  • Work with you to turn your project idea into a letter of inquiry or a full proposal.
