Frank H. T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Awards

2008 Rhodes Award Winners Announced !

The Cornell Alumni Federation, with the endorsement of the Board of Trustees' Subcommittee on Alumni Affairs, established the Frank H. T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Award in the spring of 1994. This prestigious award honors alumni who have demonstrated extraordinary service to Cornell through long-term volunteer activities within the broad spectrum of Cornell's various alumni organizations. Such service may be reflected in the leadership roles that the individual has assumed, or through the unique contributions made by the person as a part of his or her service to Cornell. Consideration is given to the length and depth of the individual's activities; however, gifts are not among the criteria used to select honorees. University Trustees are not eligible for consideration until they are no longer active members of the Board. A maximum of six awards may be presented annually.

Honorees are chosen from candidates proposed by fellow Cornellians. Typically, honorees have been involved with Cornell since their graduation. They have served on the Board of Trustees, University Council, the Cornell Alumni Federation, the Cornell Association of Class Officers, college advisory councils, campaign committees, class activities, or Cornell clubs and alumni associations. By no means is this a complete list of the Cornell organizations to which these enterprising alumni have provided leadership and guidance.

Established in 1994, the Rhodes Award each year honors up to six alumni who have performed extraordinary service to Cornell.

Nominees are proposed by fellow Cornellians and selected on the basis of leadership, long-term volunteer work on the university's behalf, or other unique contributions.

Rhodes Award winners typically have been involved with Cornell since their graduation. The organizations they have served include the Board of Trustees, the University Council, the Cornell Alumni Federation, the Cornell Association of Class Officers, college advisory councils, campaign committees, Cornell clubs, and alumni associations.

"The Cornellians selected for the Rhodes Award represent alumni involvement at its most excellent level: unique and sustained service to the university," said CAF president Micki Kuhs '61. "The Cornell Alumni Federation is particulary proud to honor their extraordinary work."

Frank H. T. Rhodes Award Nominations Process

The Cornell Alumni Federation (CAF) would like your nominations of exceptionally dedicated alumni to be considered for the Frank H. T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Awards. These prestigious lifetime achievement awards recognize extraordinary alumni for their sustained and exemplary commitment to the University and its alumni. Each year a special committee selects no more than six alumni to receive the Rhodes Award. The committee has six members: the presidents of the CAF and the Association of Class Officers, the chair of the Alumni Affairs Steering Committee of the Board of Trustees, the University Council Chair, the immediate past chair of the Committee on Alumni Trustee Nominations, and the Director of Alumni Affairs. What will the committee consider? The committee will focus on extraordinary service to Cornell University. Specifically:

  • The length of the nominee's sustained commitment to Cornell. In recent years, consideration has been given only to those alumni who have passed their 35th Reunion year. The quality of the nominee's contribution as judged either by leadership roles assumed or by unique and unsung contributions.
  • The breadth of the nominee's commitment to the full range of Cornell alumni organizations, associations and related groups.

The committee will not consider the nominee's personal financial contributions to Cornell, business or professional achievements or outside community service. University Trustees will not be eligible until they become inactive/emeritus.
