Member-at-Large

Criteria for member selection

One or more of the following:

  • Demonstrated leadership and involvement in Cornell activities for 5 or more years.
  • Achievement of significant leadership role in business, profession, or vocation.
  • Leadership in community, education, charitable organizations, etc.

Process for member selection

  • Current Council member, dean, or staff member nominates a prospective member. (Self-nominations are also accepted)
  • Membership Committee reviews all nominations.
  • Administrative Board approves the nominations.
  • Nominees are presented to the Cornell Board of Trustees, who approve the candidates.
  • Cornell president extends a letter of invitation to become a member.
  • Council chair sends a welcome email with instructions on how to accept or decline the invitation.

How to nominate

  • Review the Council member position description.
  • Make a nomination in CUVolunteer. (You must have a personal profile in CUVolunteer in order to make a nomination)

Nominations will be accepted through October 30, 2023.

Life Membership

Criteria for life member selection

  • Council member has reached their 55th birthday.
  • Has served at least twelve years as an elected member at large on Council.
  • Has been given distinguished service to Cornell on an annual basis. The Membership Committee recommends life membership candidates to the Board of Trustees for review and election.

Criteria must be met by July 1 of the year the term would begin.

Process for life member selection

  • List of eligible candidates generated by staff liaison to Membership Committee.
  • Membership Committee reviews all nominations.
  • Administrative Board approves the nominations.
  • Nominees are presented to the Cornell Board of Trustees, who approve the candidates.
  • Cornell president extends a letter of invitation to become a life member.
  • Council chair sends a welcome e-mail with instructions on how to accept or decline the invitation.
