HardyCongratulations to Jane E. Hardy '53

On January 29, 2011 the Cornell Association of Class Officers recognized Jane E. Hardy '53 as the 2011 William "Bill" Vanneman '31 Outstanding Class Leadership Award recipient at the 2011 Cornell Alumni Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. Each year an alumni leader is recognized for their lifelong exceptional leadership on behalf of their class and Cornell.

Jane has held dozens of significant volunteer roles over the years. Most recently she has served as the Cornell Association of Class Officers vice president, the vice president and 50th Reunion co-chair for the Class of 1953, and a member of the 55th Reunion Campaign Major Gifts/Gift Planning Committee. Her work on the bylaws for CACO has made governance easier and more efficient. Jane was a significant leader in growing the Mid-Winter Meeting from a class-only event to one that welcomes all Cornell volunteers. She is a member of the Cornell University Council and serves on the Committee on the Arts and the Student Affairs Committee and has been a loyal supporter of the Cornell Plantations and athletics programs. In addition, Jane has traveled the world with Cornellians through Cornell Adult Universityand is a regular at Cornell events in her hometown of Ithaca.

As a former faculty member, Jane has also brought a unique perspective and understanding of the Cornell culture into her volunteerism. She was a senior lecturer in the Department of Communication in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for 31 years, where she taught hundreds of Cornellians the joy of writing and editing and the science of writing well.

Our members

More than 1,700 class officers from more than 70 classes are volunteering their time and talent to help their classmates forge stronger ties with Cornell.

Our work

The CACO board guides the big picture for CACO’s efforts. These include:

  • Leadership development—evaluating current CACO programming and work on new training initiatives
  • Membership (link to class and membership page)—evaluating membership statistics and initiatives and collaborating with the Cornell Alumni Magazine to increase duespayer numbers
  • Diversity—review current programs and events for ways to diversify class officer leadership and programming
  • Communications—develop communications that help students and alumni identify more closely with their classes and participate in Cornell activities
  • Student mentoring—nurture current students and introduce them to volunteer roles

We volunteer our time and experience to:

  • Provide partnerships, guidance and offer suggestions for lifelong engagement for young alumni and undergraduate leaders
  • Mentor and support class officers and class initiatives
  • Develop training programs and guidelines for alumni volunteers
  • Work closely with  the Cornell Annual Fund to promote annual giving and reinforce campaign priorities
  • Seek ways to improve service to class officers
