BigRedBites

NASA astronaut Megan McArthur enjoys fresh food on the International Space Station.

A team of six Cornell grad students is among the winners of Phase 1 of NASA's Deep Space Food Challenge for their BigRedBites. Team members created a compact food system that minimizes inputs and waste to produce mushrooms, vegetables, and plant-based patties that satisfy up 15% of an astronaut's daily caloric requirements. The competition is seeking novel food sources suitable for long-duration space missionsincluding future voyages to Mars.
